Litter on ice.
Truly the most depressing time of year in Hamtramck is the spring thaw.
Months of litter is liberated from the ice and snow only to languish in muddy gutters and the swampy low spots where sidewalks meet lawns.
Strike that.
Truly the most depressing time of year in Hamtramck is when the spring thaw suddenly reverts to sub-zero temperatures and the freshly revealed litter refreezes to the ground, rendering it unremovable until the next spring thaw.
Man.

Between all the community groups there are probably 3 to 5 significant cleanups coming up in the next couple of months. Councilmember Cedar usually takes on organizing the largest one. Giant dumpsters. Dozens of volunteers from here and abroad. Brooms, bags and glubbs all around--the works.
I will keep you posted...

Preserve Our Parks has a spring clean up day, where we focus on Hamtramck's Veterans' Memorial Park and the area around it. This year it is May 14. We are joined by 100 volunteers from outside our community, from an organization called Volunteer Impact.
For those interested, POP will also be planting trees on the south end of Hamtramck -- 30 of them -- on April 30. This is to replace, in part, the trees lost in our community due to Emerald Ash Borer. We work on this with local volunteers and the Greening of Detroit.
Finally, if you are looking for some Spring fun, POP organizes Kite Day on April 16 at Veterans' Park. It is quite a sight -- hundreds of kites in the air over the Park. I know Milosz will be there.
Check out our homepage at www.hamtramckparks.org. It needs a little updating, but you will get the idea.

Yes. They are, however, sold pre-soiled only.
